Just ’cause I don’t post beverages much doesn’t mean don’t like to drink them! And one of my favorites is sangria!! Whether or not I should even call this sangria is debatable… it’s not the same fancy stuff you may get to sip on throughout the streets of Spain (though my time there has definitely influenced this!). What it is though is easy, quick, and super duper tasty…
I started tossing together drinks like this when I was a little youngin’ in college… I’d add whatever juices I had around with whatever wine I had on hand, add some fruit, some ice, and drink up! I loved it. Still do, but now I’ve actually settled on a simple concoction that’s my go-to mix. It’s inexpenive, very easy, and scrumptiously delish 🙂
All you need is some good wine you like (yes, that matters- the better the wine, the better the sangria!), some sparkly goodness, and a little fruit-flavored soda or juice. I really like blood orange Italian soda… it makes the mix refreshing, slightly sweet, and a little zingy. Then I add some fruit- you can use whatever you like… apples, pineapple, blueberries, oranges, etc. I tend to like strawberries, pineapple, and apple along with a little fresh mint and lemon or lime.
Some sangria-makers add brandy or other exta kick… but like I said, this is an inexpensive and easy version- so if you have it, great, but for this simple concoction, I use simple ingredients. Also, you can make white wine sangria- I love it on hot summer days… just switch the red wine for white and go a wee heavier on the ice! For fall and winter months though, I love me some red wine 🙂
Note: I don’t add the lemon or lime wedges to the pitcher (maybe, just maybe if I’m going to drink it right away). But I find the rind/peel adds a bitterness when it sits for a while… no bueno. Instead, I add them to the glass rims and let people squeeze in their own 🙂
INGREDIENTS
1 bottle of red wine (I like blends such as Cupcake Red Velvet or Ménage à Trois Red Table Wine)
3 cups blood orange soda
1 cup sparkling mineral water (any flavor- orange, lemon, berry, or lime)
about 1/2 cup each strawberries, pineapple, and apple- all finely chopped
fresh mint sprigs
ice (I add to glasses, not pitcher, so doesn’t melt/dilute sangria)
1 large pitcher
*fruit pieces, mint, and lemon/lime slices for garnish (read note above about lemon/lime)
DIRECTIONS
Finely chop up all fruit
Toss it in the bottom of a large pitcher
Add liquids, stir, and adjust amounts as desired
Toss in one or two sprigs of mint
Refrigerate until ready to drink
To serve, add ice to cups and pour in sangria- make sure some fruit gets in there!
Garnish and enjoy!!
