If you’re not into the whole ‘fat is your friend’ thing, no doubt you’re going to think this is weird. But weird or not, once you make it, you’re going to love it too.
I slowly started adding coconut oil and ghee to my coffee a couple of years ago. I was trying to do less dairy for a while, but still wanted to enjoy my coffee in the mornings. I did the whole black thing for a bit. Eh, I got used to it, I guess, kinda. But then I heard about the frothing magic that happens when coffee and fat are blended. Um, holy amazing. It seriously shocked me- it was like a latte- a super fluffy frothy perfect latte. My mind was blown. I really couldn’t believe the chemistry magic created.
Now, I struggle to make my coffee in any normal fashion- after having it this way, I want froth every morning. The fun of this is you can still add in whatever staples you love- be it cream, honey, etc- but whip it up with a little dollop of fat and you’ll have yourself a cafe-style treat right at home! It’s magic. Magic, I tell you.
I recently visited my sister in SF. I made us brecky- some eggs benedict with hollandaise and zucchini rounds in place in muffins- while she whipped up some coffee. Mornings with my sis don’t happen nearly enough, so we enjoyed the treat on many levels. She handed me a cup of coffee… but this coffee was like no other. It was holiday-ish… lightly spiced with cinnamon and vanilla and perfectly frothed. I was dying with excitement over this blend she’d concocted. How had I never had this before??!!? The very next day, I went home and whipped some up. And I literally haven’t stopped since. It’s such a treat. An easy delicious treat.
If you’re new to the blended coffee thing, this will be a super fun surprise. Just wait and see!
If you’re not, the addition of cinnamon and vanilla will be what makes you smile. Either way… it’s a win-win. You’re gonna love it, I just don’t see how you couldn’t. 😉
You could use coconut oil for this (I recommend one that’s not super coconutty in flavor), or you could use butter or ghee (I recommend using a high-quality grass-fed one… for butter I like Kerrygold or Fond O’ Foods, for ghee I like Pure indian Foods or make my own). Some days I use just coconut, some days just ghee, some days butter, and some days I use a little mix of them all. The exact amount you add doesn’t matter- just keep in mind, the more you add, the fluffier it’ll get. If 1 tbsp sounds like a lot to you, start with 2 tsp instead (there are 3 in a tbsp). Play around ’til you find what’s best for you. 🙂
I like to think I’m treating myself on multiple levels by starting the day with this. My soul instantly becomes happy, because it tastes so darn delicious and cozy, but I also like to think I’m physically doing my body good too. The healthy fats, they say, help not only with brain function, but with digestion as well. I’ll go with that notion happily… each time I sip, I get more and more convinced this is indeed medicine for my soul.
This frothy coffee is lovely with just vanilla and cinnamon alone, but if you like a little sweetness in your morning drinks, adding a little honey is absolutely delicious. It really is happiness in a mug. ♥
Once you get the idea of the basic blend here, it’s fun to play around a little too. I’ve tried a ginger and nutmeg, a little cardamom, and a little chocolatey blend too. All are tasty, but truthfully, there’s something I love about the simple vanilla-cinnamon blend. Sometimes less really is more.
makes one serving… double or triple as needed

2-3 tsp coconut oil, ghee, and/or grass-fed butter
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
optional, for a little sweet touch: 1 tsp honey (or pure maple syrup)
*you’ll need a NutriBullet or other similar blender for this
**just fat and coffee do wonders on their own, but play around with different flavors and you’ll have your own little café at your fingertips! Try almond, lavender, or whatever else your belly desires. 🙂
DIRECTIONS
Add all ingredients to NutriBullet
Blend for approx 10 seconds
And done!
The easiest, right?!
Pour right away… you want that froth while it’s fresh and fluffy!
